It may not seem like Vikings were popular before The History channel came out with their hit show, “Vikings”, but in reality Vikings, themselves, have always been a subject of interest. Long before the show that has us all glued to the TV, Vikings were prominent in many other areas of entertainment. Take, for example, Opera. In 1874 people flocked to see Der Ring des Nibelungen. You have mighty Vikings, Norse Gods, and tides of Valkyrie taking the dead to feast with the Gods.
What makes Vikings so damn popular? Let’s take a look at that through the eyes of today’s crowd. What is it that makes Viking warriors so appealing? Many of you might think that it’s the brutality and raiding that make them so “cool”, but that’s only a small part of it. There’s a warrior hidden in all of us. Today’s PC war wants to remove the free thinker as well as the warrior. Lucky for us, there will always be warriors.
When many of us think of Vikings we think about living off of the land as they did so long ago while both men and women were able to be mighty warriors. Vikings were both respected and feared. They lived as a community and fought battles as well as supplied food for each other. Scandinavian families value each other very highly. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to be that tough?
Yes, they raided. Yes, they voyaged. Yes, they were badass. The mystery and the marvel of that time and place sing to many of us. Embracing your inner “heathen” has become a goal for a lot of people. Many of those people felt that way before the show even came out but now they simply have a culture that links their inner spirit to something real.
While it’s true that there is historical fact in many of the things that happen on the show; there are also flaws. Instead of those flaws having a negative impact, quite the opposite has occurred. We have seen more people delving into the histories of the Vikings and making more discoveries. We’re learning more about Scandinavian history than we previously knew. Just watching the show, “Vikings” teaches you about the prominent players in history. So, while you sit back and enjoy the intrigue and battles, you’re actually learning. Yes, I know, it’s not why you watch it. But, it is a nice bonus.

If you know even a little about Norse mythology, there are a few great finds about Odin’s Ravens, Huginn and Muninn. (Thought and Memory) These days, Vikings are more popular than Vampires and Werewolves. After all, Vikings have all of the cool mystique that vampires and werewolves have with none of the side effects.
